Carol Schram: Vancouver Canucks Emerson Etem on Bubble as Ruutu, Skille Fight for Jobs The Vancouver Canucks have some healthy competition happening for their final roster spots as PTO candidates Tuomo Ruutu and Jack Skille push for jobs while new father Emerson Etem fails to generate the chances his coach wants to see.

Great insight Carol,

We gave up a third for Pedan, if he gets waived JB will take heat for it.

Thanks for the great article as usual Carol - I wish the season would start already, the suspense is killing me!

I'd Like to see Labate, Gaunce and Stecher stay with the team for a bit to see how they do in the first month and Etem waived, Larson to Utica, Sbiza traded!

How come Gaunce (and a few other bubble players) seem to be the only Canucks who worked hard all off-season?

It's like the days of Big Country Reeves all over again, where the summer is 4 months of boozing it up and doing nothing. When was the last time you heard about a Canuck coming into camp and surprising everyone with how much stronger they were?

I think Sheppard's been much better than people give him credit for.. he just doesn't do anything flashy. When you see him out there he is very reliable defensively and hes a work horse in the corners and behind the net. It's not often another player is able to strip the puck off of him. But yeah he doesn't show incredible speed like Skille and hasn't fire as many nice shots as Ruuttu. In the end I'd love to see Ruuttu and Sheppard get contracts and play a role on the 4th line and penalty kill while seeing if Labate and Gaunce can really impress in the AHL to start the season. Sit Etem, Dorsett and maybe Granlund.

Ive changed my mind on stetcher. I say start him in the minors until a dman can be moved as not to loose something for nothing, but stetcher is showing he belongs no doubt. A few games in utica wont kill him. tryamkin starts down there or goes back to russia, hopefully utica as it should be the best place for him to log huge minutes.

JV to utica to play first line minutes. I really like Labates game but if you could get him playing top 6 minutes and working on his offense in utica it would probably best. If he could some how develop in to a 3rd line guy that would be ideal.

etem to utica

sign ruutu/skille for 4th line duties.

I think you are just not paying attention.

I read and heard many pieces about players training regimes over the off season.

I think Stetcher is NHL ready. Let him stay.

Tram on the other hand could use some time there - hopefully his ego won't get in the way of his development.

Putting a few players on waivers is not as dangerous as we make it out to be. Perhaps we're a little biased towards guys like Pedan, Etem and we don't want to see them get nabbed like Corrado - but from the outside looking in - other teams see the Canuck in the bottom of the barrel or even in decline so if someone like Pedan cant crack our lineup, why would they be attractive to their team?

I don't know, under no scenario can I see TO passing on Pedan. He is a much higher end prospect that Corrado. I'll be pissed if the rumour is true

I saw this as part of a comment on CA regarding the LV draft and some things management is considering in who makes the club.

"They are required to expose at least one defenseman and two forwards who have played at least 40 games in 2016-17 or 70 games in the past two seasons. Sbisa has to play 29 games and Biega needs 19 to be eligible or they would need to expose one the top-four guys. Dorsett has already played enough games to be eligible, but I'm not sure if there is an obvious second choice. In my mind it would either need to be Granlund (23 games needed), Etem (12 games needed), or Burrows (0 games needed but would need to be re-signed to a 1-year deal)."

So that makes me think it is less likely one of these pto guys gets a contract, Etem is waived, unless it is a 2 year contract so they can be exposed for the LV draft. or expose Granlund. Burrows isn't getting extended.

you might be right but I think that Corrado situation was an anomaly (although the Leafs do love our leftovers)

A ton of players get placed and pass waivers everyday that are arguably much better than Pedan. And if he was that much of an asset wouldn't he have just made the team? We should be aiming higher!!

He did make the team. Willie is a (frank)ing moron if he would prefer Biega or even Tree for that matter

Hypothetically who would the team in LV prefer to take from us? Sbisa/Biega, Dorsett, Granlund, Etem, Gaunce? I would imagine Gaunce would be the guy to go especially considering how he is trending upwards at the moment.

It's not at all clear that Corrado makes the team this year. I don't think they take Pedan unless they think he can help now or is better than someone like Marincin or Hunwick.

It really opens up a can of worms for us to be forced into playing Sbisa or Biega. Perhaps that's why there are rumours we're keeping Biega over Pedan. Trade Sbisa during the season and get Biega in the games he needs to be exposed.

yeah Biega should live out the rest of his days in Utica

Tram is still a bit of a wildcard, I think he needs a full season of close attention and a decent partner to help him develop with the big boys - he'll find his footing, raise his compete level and understand where he needs to be physically/w regards to conditioning.

ei. I don't want to lose Pedan but I have feeling he clears if it comes to that. maybe we should take bets?

I'm not saying Corrado will make the team, I'm saying Pedan is a better hockey player. TO and several teams would likely claim the kid. It's idiotic to put him on waivers

Let's bet I like Tree as well but Pedan is further along in his development
